Bethany Hamilton, a teenage competitive surfer, definitely could have had a victim mentality. In October of 2003, Bethany Hamilton was surfing off the coast of Hawaii. All of a sudden a 14-foot tiger shark attacked her. The shark then ripped off her left arm. Hanging on to her surfboard with her right arm, she managed to swim back to shore and reach safety.
Bethany Hamilton could have blamed the whole thing on sharks or Hawaii, but she didn't. Just four months after the shark attack, she got back on her board and began the hard work of training for surfing competitions again. Bethany soon placed fifth in her age group at the National Surfing Championships. She says she has to kick a lot harder to make up for the lost arm, but she still loves surfing as much as she ever did. Rather than give up and have a victim mentality, Bethany Hamilton's overcoming perseverance is now leaving a positive impact on the world of surfing.
